The most useful approach to use in critically analyzing The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway is "The Fisherman as Artist".
An artist is the person who acts in accordance with his or her belief and keeps groping for something that satisfies his or her feeling. According to The Old Man and the Sea (p.105 l.10 - l.20), his belief is living as a fisherman because he said he was born to be a fisherman and he had pride of being fisherman. So he killed the fish not to eat nor to sell the fish but to being a fisherman. He loved the great fish, but he killed the fish in order to keep being a fisherman. If not, he is not a fisherman because the duty that a fisherman must do is to fight fish, to catch fish, and finally to kill fish. When he finished his duty as a fisherman, he would be satisfy.

ARW Blogging Assignment 5(p.9-28)
The main characters in Old Man and the Sea are Santiago, a fisherman and Manolin, a boy who helps him.
Three adjectives that describe Santiago are "energetic", "lonely", and "gentle".
He is "energetic" parson because of his eyes, his body, and his work. His eyes are clear like the sea. It shows us that he has the mind like the sea which has the image of vastness, strength, and being undefeated. His body is still strong but old. His skin and his scars indicate that he is skillful fisherman who works at the sea long time. His work is fishing although he is an old man. He leaves power that he still can work as fisherman.
The boy is an only friend he has, so he seems to be "lonely". Also he had wife and her relics is in his house. Her photograph that is on the shelf make him too lonely because he loves her very much. Perhaps he does not feel lonely because he has a friend, the boy, but he must feel lonely when the boy is not nearby him.
He is a "gentle" because of following reasons. At the Terrace, although he is made fun of by other fisherman, he is not angry. He must have broad-minded. Also he is going to thank the owner of the Terrace to give something though the boy says that he already said to thank and he makes the boy wake up. Maybe my opinion is thought by a few reasons, but I think he is always concerned about other people.

He always help the old man. He carries the old man's fishing tools anytime and brings their supper while the old man sleeps. Moreover he puts a blanket over the old man's shoulders, so he is very kind person.

The thesis statement I've chosen for essay1 is the following: we should not use a dictionary while reading a long passage because reading with it takes too much time, understanding whole statement is important, and expecting meaning of word is essential skill in college study.

According to Meiland, a "good" college teacher presents information in the following way.He or she treat Information which like that we are taught as facts in high school as a kind of theory which is supported by evidence not being enough and may be wrong.So in college we learn to think on the basis of evidence which is "rationally justified." Also a "good" college teacher says we should think ourselves on basis of it and teaches how do we examine evidence.
I agree with Meiland's opinion and I am impressed by it because in high school I did not learn doubting the fact that seems to be true.I think this is critical thinking.I want to be a person who can do it.
